uggs: to buy or not to buy? a pros and cons list.

i know it’s 2011 and that if i was going to buy uggs, i should have done it in 2001 when it was still cool. hipsters have moved on, but i am still thinking about buying some because my toes are consistently numb (yes, in la- my office is 66 degrees). here is my dilemma:

work & creativity

working 45 hours a week and having 15 hours a week of classes has been no picnic this semester. it’s hard to get up at 5am, it’s hard to do 4 hours of homework once i get back from the office at 7, and it’s hard not to resent people who are venting about their job or their school, when i am doing both at once.

it seems like people always say that hard work will pay off in the end. i don’t know- that’s definitely a part of what it takes to be successful, but if you are running your butt off in the wrong direction, did you really do anything positive? looking back, i can see a lot of areas where i could always honestly say, “i am 100% committed! i am working so hard! i want this so badly!” but i struggled because i wasn’t trying new methods of solving my problems- i was doing the same things over and over again. i am happy to say that over the past few months, i have been growing in my creativity and have learned to surround myself with mentors and advisors- or maybe they were always there and i just now noticed?

every sunday, tad and i skip church and go to breakfast. today we went to whole foods and had fantastic coffee and croissants, and also picked up some asparagus, red onions, mushrooms, and zucchini for dinner tonight. it’s nice to go a little slower one day a week.

i am going to do my homework and then swing by lush for some love lettuce and the gym for jog and have an all around calm and peaceful day.

maybe i’ll pick up some peonies on the way home.

sigh. it’s just really nice to slow down.

$70 for 6 days of great food. why not 7? get real, you know i am not going to eat at home every day.

red circles are for me, black for tad. i print these out on business cards. makes things fun, keeps food organized, and leaves me with more money to spend on philosophy bubble bath.

steamed clams

shopping

littleneck or manilla clams, closed and perfect on the outside- 2lbs

butter- 3 tablespoons

garlic- 3 cloves

dry white wine- 1/2 cup

parsley

lemon

crusty bread

cleaning

soak clams in water for 30 minutes

pull clams out of water and rinse

scrub shells with scrubber brush

cooking

melt butter

saute garlic for 3 minutes

add wine and bring to simmer

add clams and cook about 7 minutes

throw out unopened clams

add parsley

serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread on the side

nutrition

8 clams- 2 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, 23 grams of protein
